Work and Luck

The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work.

– Harry Golden
A former acquaintance would frequently say “If it wasn’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all!” On the surface, that sounds kind of funny and it can ring true but it isn’t a good motto to have. It undermines initiative and with that motto you don’t put forth your best effort. It’ll cause you to think “Why bother? I never have good luck; nothing works out for me.”

As today’s quote says, hard work trumps hard luck every time. In fact, the busier you are with the work that needs to be done—the work that takes you down the pathway to your dreams—the more likely you are to come across opportunities and options that you wouldn’t have if you didn’t take the initiative and didn’t keep giving it your best effort no matter what.

And, when others, especially those who espouse the motto of my former acquaintance, see what you’ve done and the opportunities that seemed to fall into your lap, they’ll say that you’re lucky. But you’ll know the truth: doing the work that needs to be done—the work that moves you closer to your dreams—is responsible for all the things that seem to fall into your lap.

Keep doing the work because it’s your lucky charm!

Your homework is to take the next step! Break it into smaller and smaller bits, jots, and specks until you get to the pieces that are just the right size for you. Then do them—and watch your luck turn for the better!

You can do it!

I’m so proud of you!

Your Friend and Pep Pal,

Lauren
