Yes we can!
~Barack Obama, 2008 Presidential acceptance speech
At first, the affirmation feels great. It gives you power and energy and you’re motivated to step forward.
Then something happens: you get tired or you hit a snag.
Or, worse, you hang around with Neil Negative or Debbie Downer and you begin to doubt your dreams and your plan of how to get there and, even worse yet, you begin to feel dumb and silly not only for trying but for even having the thought that you have the ability to get what you want.
But you made a promise to yourself–and us here at Daily Pep Talks–to take itsy-bitsy parts of steps toward your dreams.
But you need encouragement and a boost of energy, so you say your affirmation: Yes I can!
But you don’t get the boost.
In fact, it feels as if the affirmation has siphoned out of you the last little bit of energy you did have.
You feel silly and dumb and incompetent and incapable.
So you stop saying the affirmation; you conclude that affirmations don’t work.
It’s when you’re feeling the lowest, the stupidest, the silliest, the most hopeless, the most helpless that you need the affirmation!!
This is when you must say the affirmation!
In spite of the tapes in your head telling you you’re ridiculous for saying it;
In spite of the people in your life telling you you’re ridiculous for saying it;
In spite of outer circumstances in your life telling you you’re ridiculous for saying it.
You CANNOT give in to the tapes in your head, what other people are saying and doing, and what outer circumstances look like. The dream in your heart is there because you are meant to achieve it; so believe in it and use the affirmation to power you to it.
Your homework today is to find an affirmation that works for you. If you can’t think of any, here are a few you can use:
~My dream is meant for me to achieve!
~I have what it takes to achieve all of my dreams!
~Yes I can!
~I can and I will!
~Do it now!
~One more step!
~I am smart; I am strong!
~I am a victor, a champion, an achiever!
~I can and I will figure it out!
~This, too, shall pass.
~All is well.
Choose an affirmation and say it to yourself frequently. Let its power boost you toward your dreams.
Keep the affirmation handy for the times when you’re feeling down and say the affirmation continuously. Set your timer for every 15 minutes and when it goes off, say the affirmation for 30 seconds. Do this throughout the day and you will be amazed at how your spirits and confidence will rise.
You can do it, I’m sure of it!
I’m so proud of you!
