A Life of Meaning

Every time I find the meaning of life, they change it. ~Reinhold Niebuhr

When I first read this quote I thought: Thank goodness I’m not the only one! Even this man renowned for his intellect has trouble figuring out how to make it through the day!

On the surface, this quote seems to be a lighthearted, off-hand quip that’s perfect for our current pop culture.

But then I realized it’s dead serious.

Under the fluff and fun, I recognized that it’s telling us we cannot, under any circumstances, let anyone else tell us what constitutes a meaningful life. For every person we ask, we’ll get a different answer. How can you live a meaningful life if you’re trying to follow billions of thoughts, ideas, and suggestions on what, exactly, makes up a meaningful life?

The best course of action—the only one, actually—is to decide for yourself what YOU find meaningful and what YOU mean by “living a meaningful life”, and then pursue that with all of you heart and soul.

Today’s homework is to take the next meaningful step that will help you move closer to living a life of meaning, 24/7.

No, not the step your family and friends want you to take; not the one your teachers, mentors, or spiritual leaders say you should take; certainly NOT the one the advertisers want you to take!

YOU take the step that YOU have decided will bring YOU to a life full of meaning.

Go for it—you can do it!

I’m so proud of you—you’re awesome!

Your Friend and Pep Pal,
