All week long we’re taking care of business whether it’s for our jobs, our friends and family, or our church or other organizations to which we belong. It isn’t unusual that our needs and what we have planned gets adjusted and pushed to the bottom of our To Do list. It also isn’t unusual that we never do make it to the bottom of that list To Do things for ourselves.
Today’s the perfect day to change that.
Your homework is to take time for yourself today. Even if you can’t carve out a chunk of time, you can at least sneak off for 15 minutes by yourself—I’ve found that the bathroom is a good “hiding place”! 😀
As you’re taking a moment for yourself, think through a typical day and note little pockets of down-time that you can take for yourself. Make it a priority to incorporate time for yourself—and only yourself!—each day.
I’ll bet you didn’t know that today is Smile Day. I didn’t! What a fun and easy day to celebrate! You don’t have to spend any money, there’s no special preparation, and you don’t have to travel anywhere.
All you have to do is smile, right where you are!
How cool is that? How easy! What fun!!
Researchers have proven that smiling is good for you. Here’s what they’ve discovered:
~Smiling is a great picker-upper for your mood;
~Smiling reduces stress;
~Smiling boost endorphins and serotonin, which help you genuinely feel good and be positive;
~Smiling lowers blood pressure;
~Smiling strengthens your immune system;
~Smiling lifts the face and makes you more attractive;
~Smiling makes you look vibrant and alive;
~Smiling is fun;
~Smiling is easy;
~Smiling is contagious! By smiling at someone, you lift their spirits and give their mood a boost and they’re more apt to smile! How cool is that?!
Studies have shown that even if you’re in a bad mood and don’t feel like smiling, just the simple act of curving your mouth into a crescent shape will give you these benefits. And, if you keep at it, soon you’ll find that your mood lifts and you’re smiling for real!
Your homework today is to celebrate Smile Day by smiling!
Whether you want to or not, whether you feel like it or not, SMILE!
No one is exempt from your smiles today: friends and family are bombarded with your warm and loving smiles; clerks, salespeople, and service personnel are showered with your smiles! Even strangers on the street aren’t going to get away without a big smile from you!
Make a game of it and see how many people you can smile at! Include your family and friends—especially kids—to see who can smile the longest or give away the most smiles today.
Even though you’re totally focused on going for your dreams and even though you’re having a blast, you still need to play.
Play is that time that you do something you enjoy just for the pure blissful fun of it!
Your homework today is to play!
Whether you goof around with your kids, family, and friends, or if you indulge in a favorite craft or hobby, go for it! Totally immerse yourself in it and absorb all the fun, joy, and pleasure out of it that you can.
Remember this experience because it can be a source of inspiration and motivation when you’re feeling anxious, sad, or unsure.
And for those of you who are American football fans—enjoy the Super Bowl! Go Team, Go!
We all have at least one person who gave us a boost at a critical time in our lives. That boost might have been something as small as a smile when we felt invisible or it could have been something big such as staying with us and encouraging us during a dark phase in our lives.
Your homework today is to thank the people who have helped you along the way.
Be grateful that these people were—or still are—in your life!
You can do this!
I’m so proud of you!
Your Friend and Pep Pal,
PS: Happy Birthday, Dad. Thanks for all the love, help, and encouragement you gave us.
Your homework today is to sit in silence in peace and serenity. Most of us have too much on our plates to do this all day today, but we CAN find pockets of time where we can sit and be still and quiet. We can juggle our schedule to give ourselves as much time as we can to do this.
This is YOUR time to connect with the Still Small Voice within, to think about your upcoming week and the steps you’ll take that will get you farther down the road to your dreams. Take this time for yourself! You deserve it!
No matter what the mess is that you’re in—whether you’ve caused it or not—you can press the reset button. You can wipe the slate clean.
You do this by making different choices.
For instance, instead of becoming frustrated by slow traffic or “idiot” drivers holding you up, choose a different response. You can choose to do some slow yoga breathing that will calm you, you can listen to uplifting music, or you can say a few of your favorite pep words and power phrases.
You can make a different choice!
Your homework today is to become aware of the habitual ways you respond to things—these are choices you are making unconsciously. Habitual choices are keeping you stuck. Identify them and come up with different choices that you can make. Then follow through with these new choices!
