Reminder: It Has Nothing to Do with You

I was looking through the archives of my blog posts and came across one that I thought would be a good reminder for us. Originally, I posted it a little over two years ago: on August 16, 2014.

Here is the post:

What other people’s standards are has nothing to do with you.

What other people value, want, like, dream of, think about, talk about, hope for has nothing to do with you.

What other people think you ought to do, should do, better do, has nothing to do with you.

It isn’t your responsibility, obligation, or job to follow what other people think you should do regarding your dreams.

The only thing that is your responsibility is tuning into the Still Small Voice and the urgings of your heart and soul.

I hope this post was a good reminder for you, just like it was for me.

It’s so easy to be influenced by other people’s thoughts, ideas, wants, desires, values, etc.. It’s even easier to allow those thoughts, desires, and values to cause us to second-guess ourselves. And, it’s easier still to then decide that perhaps other people are right–maybe they have some insider knowledge on what’s the secret and the shortcut to the life of our dreams.

The truth is that what they think, say, do, have, want, etc., has nothing at all to do with us.

We’re free to listen politely and then go along on our merry way following our heart, soul, and our Still Small Voice! J

Look Forward

Sometimes we find ourselves in the doldrums. Our life may not be that bad, but it isn’t that good either.  But yet, we lack the energy and enthusiasm that we need to get ourselves out of the blue funk we’re in.

I’ve found the best way to do this is to look forward to something–anything.

It doesn’t have to be anything big and exciting; just a little something that you can get a little excited about is good enough.

For instance in the morning, as you’re in bed trying to muster the courage to get out, think about that first sip of coffee that you’ll have, or perhaps you can think about the fresh blueberries you’ll put on your cereal this morning. Or, you can look forward to wearing your favorite tie or a spray of your favorite perfume.

On your drive to work, perhaps you can look forward to seeing the cornflowers that are blooming in the highway’s median. Or you can look forward to having your lunch on a park bench nearby your office.

Find something to look forward to. Then, engage all your senses when you think about it so that you can get yourself really excited and enthused about it.

Using the blueberries on your morning cereal as an example, think about the deep vibrant blue of the berries. And notice that toward the stem end, some of the berries are a magenta color.  Challenge yourself to observe the berries closely to find other variations in their color.  Then imagine feeling their firm roundness as you rinse them off and, of course, imagine the explosion of sweet-tart in your mouth when you take a bite of them!  YUM!

Do this for all the little things–and big things–that you find in your day that you can look forward to. As you keep doing this, you’ll find your energy and enthusiasm returning!

YAY!

You can do it!

Connecting the Dots: Don’t Lose Hope

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about a portion of the famous Steven Job’s 2005 commencement speech at Stanford University where he talks about connecting the dots.

We were agreeing that this is so true: you don’t know how the dots will connect in your life.  And you won’t know until you have the perspective of time, meaning that you’ll see in retrospect that the dots have, or are in the process of, connecting up.

Sometimes that perspective of time is a long, long time. It isn’t a matter of days, weeks, or months.  And sometimes you can’t see the dots connecting after a year or even five years.  Sometimes it takes living nearly your whole life–40 or more years–before you start to see dots connecting and how events in your life have fit together to get you to where you are and to make you who you are.

So, don’t lose hope if it seems like in spite of all your hard work and dedication that you seem off track and that things aren’t coming together. Keep going because in time you’ll see how it all fits together–how the dots connect.

Bookmark Steven Job’s speech and refer to it often–especially when you need a reminder about connecting the dots in your life.

Please pass this post along to a friend–thanks!

Happy 4th of July: Let Freedom Ring

No matter where you live, commit to letting freedom ring in your corner of the world. People were born to live the life of their dreams and on one has the right to prohibit or curtail that in any way or form.

You can model letting freedom ring by going for your dreams and reaching out a helping hand to those around you and encouraging them to live the life of their dreams as well.

You CAN do it!
