Sitting in Silence on a Sunday Morning

It’s been a while since we talked about sitting in silence. I hope you’ve been keeping up with your practice. I find it to be so worthwhile to do, especially first thing in the morning, and I want that for you, too.

An added bonus is sometimes when my day isn’t going well, I’ll find a quiet place and sit for a few moments. It helps me regain my footing and remember that taking things step-by-step and doing my best at every moment will pay off.

I found the poem below and think it’s a good a reminder of a few of the benefits of sitting in silence:

It only takes a moment for the silence to work its wonders, although I recommend that you spend 15 – 20 minutes in silence.

Playlist to Harness Your Anger

The power of anger can feel almost uncontrollable, and that can be very scary. As a result, oftentimes we feel we need to “stuff” our angry feelings because we want to scream, shout, and throw a fit…but we know that won’t solve anything. But yet, what do we do with all that energy?

One of the best ways to release the steam that builds up when we’re angry is through music and movement. Here is a short playlist to help you do that.

Even though some of these songs are about love gone wrong, feel free to substitute words and names so that the song is customized to you and your situation.

Morning Routines at Work: Playlist Specifics

I’ve gotten feedback from several of you, my Friends and Pep Pals, who wanted to know specifics of what I listen to in each category of the playlist I included in yesterday’s post.   While there are many great choices on YouTube–my go-to music streaming source–these are the “albums” I listen to at this time.  Next week, next month, I might list different selections, but right now this is it:

Morning Routines at Work

This week we’ve talked about morning routines and adding “fun stuff” not only to lighten up the mood of doing them but also to give ourselves satisfaction and joy.

Just for us.

Just because.

What about when you arrive at work, though? Do you use the energy and the self confidence gained from your morning routine at home to slingshot you into a productive and effective day at work?  Do you let your co-workers’ drama or the latest panicked directive from your boss derail and dissipate all you gained?

Experts state–and researchers have confirmed–that the first few hours are the most productive. Successful people have proven this time and time again.  It’s routine for them to get into the office by 6 or 7 in the morning and they tackle the worst and toughest problems first.  They’re at their freshest and there are few distractions and interruptions so they can put the full force of their mind and talents to the tasks.

If you aren’t already “hitting the ground running” when you arrive at work, what can you do to alter your routine so that you are productive right off the bat? Perhaps you need to park in a different part of the lot so that you don’t walk in with Moaning Martin.  Perhaps you can bring in your own coffee so that you don’t stand at the company coffee pot and listen to Cranky Cathy and Downer Doug.

Give your morning routine at work some thought. Take time to work out a routine for yourself.  Don’t worry or become discouraged if you have to tweak things.  Accept it as a normal and natural process of honing the routine until you get something that works for you.

Morning Routines: Fun Stuff!

Yesterday we explored the idea of what if we added “fun stuff” to the serious stuff that we already do such as meditating and exercise. Today, let’s list fun things we can do.

 

~Blow bubbles

As you know, right now this is one of my go-to fun activities.

 

~Singing any old which way you feel like it in the moment

This was offered by a long-time reader of this blog.   This is a great way to oxygenate your system, a fun way to move around and get a little exercise, and you can’t help but feel better after singing at the top of his/her lungs!  🙂

 

~Taking the time to make a delicious breakfast

This was suggested by a friend of mine who enjoys home cooking but doesn’t always take the time to make breakfasts she loves such as pancakes, waffles, and vegetable scrambled eggs.

 

~Sitting outside with a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper

A neighbor offered this one.  He has a small “grove” of pine trees and in it nestled an Adirondack chair.  Now with it lighter in the mornings, he sometimes sneaks out there to read for a few minutes before heading off to work.

 

~Reading in a fun book

A young mother who does a lot of technical reading for her job loves to wake up a little early and read her latest fun book–or mind candy book, as she calls it!  🙂

 

~Doodling

An artist friend of mine enjoys doodling first thing in the morning.  She doodles shapes, symbols, or random strokes; sometimes she uses graphite pencils and sometimes she used magic markers or crayons.

 

~Origami

A friend of mine has a high pressure management position and she likes to fold origami.  In the mornings when she does it, the activity becomes a meditation for her.  And afterward, not only is her soul nourished but she has a pretty flower or animal to show for the efforts, which boosts her spirits.  And the origami also boosts the spirits of the person she gives it away to.  Cool!

 

~Ironing

I know what you’re thinking:  what the heck is ironing doing on this list of fun activities to do in the morning?!  Believe it or not, I have a friend who enjoys ironing early in the morning.  She likes that it lends itself to meditation.  She also likes the smell of the hot iron on the cotton fabric–it connects her to her childhood and memories of her mother.  And she and her family have crisply pressed clothes in the bargain!

 

 

As you can see, there are a variety of different activities. The common thread through them all is pleasure.  Each of these activities weren’t something that the person had to do; they were activities that the person chose to do for the simple fact that it gave them pleasure.

Morning Routines: What If…?

Last week we talked about James Allen’s recommendation that we get up when our alarm clock first rings. He claimed that this simple act strengthens our will, leading to self-mastery, which is the cornerstone of a successful and fulfilling life.

This got me to thinking a little deeper about morning routines. We all have one, whether it’s something regimented or if it’s a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, we all have certain things we do in the morning to get us up and going and out the door, reasonably on time.

When we think of the phrase “morning routine” it conjures up serious activities such as meditating and exercising. These are great activities and they certainly are worthy of being included in our morning routine, but what if we also included some “fun stuff”?

How would it make us feel to give ourselves enough time to sit quietly outside with our morning coffee or tea and watch the sunrise? What kind of a boost would it give our spirits?

How about scheduling in time for us to do something that’s totally indulgent and even frivolous for ourselves: practicing magic tricks, learning how to juggle, playing the kazoo, learning how to do handstands, or my favorite activity of practicing our bubble blowing technique?

Do you think this would put a spring in our steps and get us off to a happy start in our day?

I think so! I also think it’s worth a shot!
