At the farm this past week, for our shares, we were able to pick one sunflower. At first glance, it looks as if they are done for the season. All that seems to be left are withered stalks and shrunken flower heads. But, when I shifted my focus just a little bit–less than a foot– and poked around, I saw brand new blooms hidden among the dried stalks. I found a beauty to take home!
This got me to thinking….
How many “parched fields” do we pass by because we think there’s nothing of value there? What would we see if, instead of speeding by, we took a moment to slow down so we could get a good look at them? What if we were to stop and poke around a bit; what rare flower or delectable fruit would we find?
Your homework today is to stop being so quick to judge and dismiss an opportunity because it seems like there’s nothing there. Take a moment to shift your focus and see it from a variety of angles; think it through. You may find that breakthrough you’ve been searching for!
No matter where you are and no matter what you have to deal with today, you can pause and delight in the beauties of this season. Yes, you have worries, yes you have cares but you also have a moment to notice the splendors right in front of you.
Your homework is to look around you and delight in the day.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. ~Leo Buscaglia
One aspect of living the life of your dreams is joy and a manifestations of joy is smiling.
Your homework today is to be extravagantly, wastefully, generous in giving your smiles away. Your smile is awesome and you never know who it will help, even if fleetingly, and how that help will boomerang back to you.
Remember to smile at yourself, too! Stand straight and tall in front of your mirror and smile at yourself. And, don’t give it a lick and a promise! Take the time to really look at yourself, the way your smile causes your eyes to sparkle and creates a pleasant glow about you. Relish the positive and joyous feelings that smiling at yourself gives you.
Give yourself something to smile about such as when reviewing your week, smile and whoop and dance with joy at all the progress you’ve made, no matter how small and seemingly insignificant. It all adds up so it all counts!!
And celebrate with your friends and family by having a Send a Smile fest! Make a game of it by seeing who can smile the biggest, who can smile the wackiest, who has the cutest smile, and any other categories you can think of.
Today begins the last quarter of 2015; we’re heading down the home stretch of the year! There’s still time to achieve some of the goals we listed at the beginning of the year.
Press the Reset Button!
Today you can declare that no matter what happened in 2015 so far–the goofs you made, the action steps you’re dragging your feet on, the ways in which you held yourself back–you can draw a line under all of this and leave it behind.
You can press the Reset Button.
You can resolve to take steps–even if they’re little smidgens of steps–toward your goals and dreams.
Your homework today is to focus forward. Forget about what you did or did not do so far this year. Leave behind all the shouldas, wouldas, and couldas. Resolve today that you will do a little something toward your dreams and goals each day, if possible. If you can’t take action each day then promise yourself that a certain time each week you will focus on your goals and dreams for a set period of time (for instance, every Saturday morning for one hour you’ll work on moving forward toward your dreams). Then follow through on that promise!
Break the actions into steps. Break those into small parts and little pieces. Break those into tiny bits. Break those into smidgens and specks. Once you get to a size that is just right for you, do those teensy tiny things!
Pressing the reset button is only a matter of refocusing on your dreams and doing the little bits and bobs of steps that will move you closer toward them!
Many times we don’t take action–or we take only half-hearted action, because we’re waiting for someone to rescue us.
Part of the reason is that if someone would rescue us then we wouldn’t have to do anything. We could stay as we are living our life the way it is now. We can stay comfortable in the life that we know well–even though it may not be the life of our dreams.
If someone would rescue us then we wouldn’t have to leave our comfort zone.
Although, it may be that being rescued isn’t what we really want.
Consider this: Perhaps we want someone to see us and think enough of us and want more and better for us and then do something about it. These feelings and desires are tied up in being valued and being thought important enough that it is worth it for the person to put forth the time and effort to help us. Perhaps what we really want is validation that we’re valuable, we’re worthy of being cared about and cared for; that our lives matter and we matter.
It’s hard to let go of that–looking outside ourselves for validation, for verification of our worth, for confirmation that we have a right to exist.
But we have to.
We must turn away from looking outside of ourselves.
It’s unhealthy to keep looking outside of ourselves for this because we will never consistently get it. Even if our friends and family are the most caring, supportive, and loving people in the world and generously shower us with their love and caring, these people are people, meaning that they are not perfect. They will have days when they are frustrated so they don’t have much love and caring for us. They have their own concerns and issues to deal with in their own lives and, again, they might not be able to give us all we need.
Sounds like there’s no hope for us, right?
There IS hope! There IS something you can do!
You can do this–all of this–for yourself!
You’re the one who knows exactly the love and care you need each moment of the day. You’re the one who can tailor the love and care to your personality and to your specific needs in any particular moment!
You CAN love and care for yourself! You CAN rescue yourself!
Your homework today is to think about the areas of your life where you are waiting for rescue. In that particular area you may need the help of experts, however, analyze the situation and ask yourself what little piece of it can you do. What little bits of steps can you take to assist the experts, making it easier for them to help you and thus enhancing the help that they give you.
As you look at the areas of your life where you’re waiting for rescue and as you take little bits of steps to solve little bits of the problem for which you are waiting for rescue, you will begin to see that you CAN help yourself. You DO have what it takes to move forward, even just a teensy tiny bit. Your confidence will grow. And, as you continue doing what you can to help yourself, you’ll soon find that you are your own rescuer!
You can do it–just take it one little teensy tiny step at a time!
I’m so proud of you for the wonderfully caring and loving way you take care of yourself.
Things CAN change for you and they WILLas long as you take steps to help yourself.
Meeting with others for brainstorming and collaborating is great. Taking classes, going to workshops and lectures is also great. Thinking positive, saying power phrases and pep words to yourself through out the day is great, too. But what super-charges all of this is actually applying, following through with, all the ideas, knowledge, and help that comes your way.
You have to do the work.
You have to take the steps.
You have to do those things that you think, guess, hope, and know will help you.
You gotta take action!
Your homework today is to take a look at the areas of your life that aren’t changing for you. Take a close look and be honest with yourself.
What are you not following through on? Break it into teensy tiny bits of steps then do those bits!
What actions do you hope will help you but you aren’t doing anything about it? Break them into tiny jots and specks then do them!
Are you waiting for someone else to do the work–are you waiting to be rescued? Find the little parts that you can do yourself. Be sure to break them into itsy bitsy dabs and smidgens, then do them!
You CAN be your own rescuer just by taking action!
Enthusiasm is a choice. Our circumstances may be outside our control, but the attitude we bring to our circumstances is entirely within our own power. ~Michael Hyatt
Many times, as we’re working toward our goals and dreams, we can get bogged down in the day-to-day particulars of what needs to be done. Quite often these tasks are time consuming, not glamorous, and not a lot of fun. But they need to be completed because they’re part of the steps we need to take to move us toward our dreams.
We find that we have to force ourselves to muscle our way through procrastination, foot-dragging, and inertia.
There’s gotta be a better way!
Good news: There is!
When you’re mired in the minutia, remind yourself of your dream. It’s the whole reason why you’re doing this! Reconnect with the excitement and enthusiasm that naturally grows out of your dream.
Your homework today—whether you are bogged down or not—is to take time to think about your dream so you can reconnect with the enthusiasm and excitement it generates in you.
Find a quiet place where you can be undisturbed for 15 – 20 minutes. Then think about and experience your dream.
This is more than an intellectual exercise; make this a sensory experience. For instance:
~How will you feel when you achieve your dream—or even when you are farther down the road and closer to achieving it? Will you feel relief? Freedom? Joy?
~What will you do? Will you payoff your credit cards and other debts you’re carrying? Will you help a loved one? Will you give back to the people who have helped you? Will you pay it forward and reach out a helping hand?
~What treat will you give to yourself? Will you do an item on your Bucket List? Will you purchase a snazzy car or some other big-ticket item? Or will you renovate your home, perhaps turning the spare bedroom into that personal library/study that you’ve always dreamed of?
Sometimes, though, your dreams are so far off and you’re so tired from working that thinking about what it’ll be like when you’ve reached your dreams does not really help. Sometimes it can feel unbelievable and add another layer to the exhaustion you may be feeling.
In that case, your homework is to still take the time to sit quietly but instead of thinking about the end result of your dreams, think about a few steps down the road. Think about and experience what it will feel like to be through the muck that has temporarily ensnared you. Think about how good it’ll feel to have made it through to the next step.
~Will you feel relief to be finally done, once and for all, with this current step?
~Will the pressures ease up when you make it to the next step?
~Are you excited to see what Good Stuff awaits you farther down the path?
~Once you get past this, will you treat yourself to a rest such as spending an afternoon—or even a whole day!—with your favorite hobby or pastime?
When you feel the enthusiasm, even if it’s just a little glimmer, focus on it. Let it infuse your body, mind, and spirit. Feel where in your body that it’s strongest. Really feel it. Give this your undivided attention so that you can help the enthusiasm grow and strengthen—just like you would do for a delicate flower.
You can do this, I know you can!
I’m so proud of you for hanging in there and taking one little tidbit of a step after the other. You’re AWESOME!
