I’m sure when you were a kid, your parents were like mine and always told you to be aware of your surroundings. My parents said this so that we would stay safe and sometimes they said it so that we could experience the little gifts and happy surprises that are present in moments throughout the day.
I was reminded of this as I was scrolling through YouTube (seems like I post about this a lot–as if I have nothing else to do but scroll through YouTube!) and I came across a few really cool videos of incredibly talented people doing their thing in public. A few of the people are famous but most are just normal people who are truly gifted.
Here are two that made me remember what Mom and Dad always told us about being aware of our surroundings.
This first one is of a person sitting down at the public piano in St Pancras International Station, London.
His playing is beyond awesome! His hands are going so fast on the keys–and he doesn’t miss one single note! Calling his playing ‘amazing’ is an understatement!
But, see how few people noticed him. There were many people standing right next to him and his piano but they never turned around to see him. And many more just walked on by…didn’t pause in their busy lives to take a moment to enjoy this spectacular treat.
Turns out the piano player was Henri Herbert, the keyboardist for the Jim Jones ReVue–a rock and roll band from London. Ironically, the very people who were ignoring his impromptu gift were the very same people who’d pay a small fortune for a ticket to see him in concert.
Here’s another video of impromptu music playing.
As with Henri Herbert, this guitar player is amazing and has a distinctive sound. It’s so cool, too, how there were a few passers by who joined him in his music making. And it was wonderful to watch it unfold.
But again, how many people walked on by? There were even people so unaware that they walked right through the trio as they were jamming!
So passing along a little Golden Wisdom courtesy of Mom and Dad: Be Aware of Your Surroundings! Enjoy the little gems that are generously shared by your fellow travelers in this world!
