Discipline: “Secret Sauce” for Making Change Stick

We all know that it takes discipline in order to achieve success and to make our dreams come true. And, we think we’re being disciplined–at least, when we compare ourselves to our friends and co-workers we’re more focused and diligent in pursuing our goals than they are about theirs.

We feel good about what we’re doing, until we come across someone who is way better than we are!

I came across an article on Bruce Lee, which featured images of handwritten pages from one of the memo books that he was famous for always carrying with him. In these little books, he recorded thoughts, ideas, insights, and the like in an effort to keep himself on track toward his goals.

He observed himself closely and honestly regarding what he was doing: what he was doing well and right as well as when he was performing less than his best. In these books, he laid out his plans for how he would achieve a goal and then would keep accurate track of his progress–no fudging or letting himself off the hook!

You might hear people say that Bruce Lee is an exception to the rule or that he’s OCD. But analyze the people saying that about Bruce. Are they successful?

Probably not.

Why?

Because (1) they probably haven’t set goals, (2) if they have set goals, they don’t take regular action toward them, and (3) they haven’t devised their own system of how to keep track so they can tell if they’re making progress or not.

We should all take a page out of Bruce Lee’s book (Ha!) to learn what real discipline is and to then apply it.

Let me know what you think of Bruce’s discipline and dedication. Put your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. I like the idea of carrying a notebook to jot down ideas and observations. I can see where this will encourage regular writing which in turn will lead to action plans. Today’s plan- buy a small notebook!

    1. Hi, Julie!
      Thank you for your comment!
I’m so glad that you’re going to try Bruce Lee’s technique of keeping a small notebook handy. The good news is that you don’t have to write volumes and volumes. Just a few words or phrases are all that’s needed. After all, this is for your benefit, not for anyone else’s so you can be as brief as you need to be. No one else has to understand it. As long as it makes sense to you when you review it later on, then you’re good!
Let me know how it goes for you!
